The Coleman Sundome Tent

If you are looking to start camping, or to replace your existing tent and you want value for money, then the Coleman Sundome range of tents could be what you are looking for.

For the purposes of this review, I am going to take my 7 x 7 Coleman sundome tent, which as the name suggests has a 7’x7’ square footprint. Because it’s a dome tent it can be erected quickly and it is self supporting when up. It has two fibre glass poles which give an internal height of 52 inches which although not quite high enough to stand upright in still gives the tent a nice airy feel. Perhaps the only  disadvantage about dome tents generally is that roof line curves downwards quite steeply, reducing headroom at the sides, although this is no real problem.

As with all tents, it’s often a good idea to buy a tent one or two people bigger than the tent is for. This Coleman Sundome Tent is rated for 3 people, but I feel that this is a little cramped for 3. It’s fine for two people and fantastic just for me! Remember, when you buy a tent you need to consider room to store your gear, especially if the weather is bad.

This Coleman Sundome tent has a single door with mesh screening as well as a fabric door. The fabric door can be held back with the use of two tiebacks on the outside wall of the tent. The door is 4’ tall and curved, with a zipper.

There is a small crescent shaped window at the rear of the tent, again with fabric and mesh screening, operated by another zip.

The fabric of this Coleman Sundome tent is treated with a polyurethane coating, which should extend the life of the tent, as well as offering some waterproofing. The tent also comes with a waterproof flysheet which helps with weather protection.

The floor of the tent is made from a thicker fabric, and comes about 5 inches up the sides. So far this has been fine, with no holes or tears appearing.

Some nice touches include a vent in the roof and two mesh pockets in the side walls of the tent for putting small items that are easily lost.

This Coleman Sundome tent is not a lightweight tent, so it’s not really suitable for hiking, but it’s good value for money and should see you through some happy camping trips!
